Initial Consultation
We start with a thorough conversation about your work and goals, giving us a clear sense of your vision and preferences. Alongside personalised guidance, you'll also fill out a detailed questionnaire covering chapter descriptions, scene details, and colour preferences for each illustration you've purchased.
Illustrator Recommendations
With your creative vision in hand, our project managers pair you with an illustrator whose style is the right match. Prefer more say in the choice? We're happy to share examples of our artists' work so you can narrow it down yourself. Either way, you'll get guidance and an initial sketch to give you confidence in the direction
Pair With an Illustrator
Our illustrators have a strong track record of creating imaginative artwork that captivates readers. Once you're matched with the right illustrator for your project, they'll produce an initial sketch so you can see how your characters are shaping up. From there, you get two rounds of unlimited changes to fine-tune things until it matches your vision, and if you'd rather switch illustrators or need extra rounds, we'll work with you to figure out the best path forward.
Black-and-White Sketches
Once the initial sketch is approved, we move into the black-and-white phase, producing a rough sketch of every illustration in your package. You'll get a proof of the full set with two rounds of changes included. Need a third round? We'll talk through how best to handle it — complex changes or a full restart may involve extra fees, but we'll always flag that with you upfront so there are no surprises.
Color Illustrations
With sketches approved, we move into the colour phase, covering both full-colour and greyscale work as illustrators ink the lines and add colour or shading. You get two more rounds of changes here for colour, shading, and small details, and your project manager will talk through anything more complex beyond that. Once you give final approval, we move from illustration into formatting, starting with your cover concept.

Do book illustrators get royalties?
Our illustrators don't take royalties. You simply pay the cost per illustration upfront, with no ongoing royalty obligations to worry about down the line.
A one-time payment works in your favour here, since most trade publishers offer illustrators royalties instead. If you've contracted an illustrator outside of Palmetto Publishing Australia on a royalty basis, they'll be entitled to a percentage of your book sales.
How do authors and illustrators work together?
We match illustrators to authors based on artistic style. Through an established process, you'll work with your Project Manager across several phases before signing off on the final illustrations.
